Summer School Geological Engineering ITB 2026

Geoconservation of Kebumen Geopark

Geological Engineering Program will organize the Summer School on Kebumen UGGp Geoconservation, in collaboration with Faculty of Social and Politics Science, Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret (UNS), an academic course designed to strengthen knowledge and practical skills in geoconservation. Geoconservation involves the identification, documentation, assessment, protection, and sustainable management of geological heritage through the integration of scientific research, technical practices, education, and policy. This initiative is particularly relevant to the Kebumen UNESCO Global Geopark, which was officially recognized in April 2025 and encompasses 42 geosites of significant geological value, including evidence of ancient seabed environments dating back approximately 200 million years. Following this international recognition, the Summer School is expected to contribute to capacity building, knowledge exchange, and collaborative conservation efforts involving academic institutions, local governments, and international partners, while also serving as a model for geoconservation initiatives in other geoparks.

Overview Summer School

The Summer School on Kebumen UGGp Geoconservation is a collaborative academic program jointly organized by the Geological Engineering Program of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and the Kebumen UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp). The program is designed as a coursework-based activity focusing on geoconservation, with the overarching goal of promoting the sustainable management of geological and earth heritage. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this initiative contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through SDG 11, Kebumen supports the preservation of geological and cultural heritage as an integral component of sustainable development that strengthens local identity and community resilience. In line with SDG 15, geoconservation efforts promote the protection of geological diversity and terrestrial ecosystems that are increasingly vulnerable to degradation caused by erosion and human activities. Furthermore, consistent with SDG 17 and guided by UNESCO Global Geopark principles, Kebumen Geopark emphasizes the importance of collaboration among government authorities, academic institutions, local communities, and international organizations to ensure the long-term sustainability of the geopark as a shared asset for scientific advancement, education, and community development.
